Fashion, The Sustainable Way !

Sustainable fashion is a niche industry that’s growing at a rapid pace. It has the potential to create thousands of jobs as well as multiple small business opportunities and also has lead to a rise in number of women entrepreneurs in India.

But what exactly is sustainable fashion? We’ve taken a dive into this and here is what we want to share with you: what it means, how it works and why it matters so much for India’s future economy.

Sustainable Fashion in India

India’s youth culture has changed over the past half a decade and specifically post the pandemic. Fashion for today’s generation has become a more mindful and meaningful practice than it has ever been for this age group of this country.

Sustainable fashion is a trend that is growing in India. It is not just about buying less, it’s about buying better—and even more importantly, it’s about buying more consciously and ethically. Sustainable fashion means you can have the same amount of style but care more about where your clothes come from and how they’re made.

For small businesses and up coming fashion brands it is more profitable and lucrative than falling into the tug of war with a red sea of already existing fashion businesses that have existed and grown for ages now.

Is it possible?

Is it possible?

Yes, it is. There are a number of sustainable fashion brands in India and they’ve been able to provide affordable fashion to the masses by using sustainable materials and manufacturing processes.

There are two main reasons why we’re seeing more sustainable fashion being produced in India:

  1. The country has been able to maintain its position as one of the few countries where textile production has not been affected by climate change;
  2. The local population understands how important it is for them (and future generations) to not just economically but also physically survive without having access to clean water or sanitation services.

How to style a sustainable wardrobe?

  • Choose sustainable fabrics and brands.
  • Look for styles and patterns that suits you and your lifestyle.
  • Look for an affordable price point or if not then look for durable material so that you
    can buy less but good.
  • Look for products that can be styled in more than one way. This way even if you spend a little more once you can use it longer.
  • Read up a bit about the brand you buy from. If they are a small batch size producing, waste minimising, upcycling and recycling brand then you are contributing significantly enough in this global journey.
  • Be open to experimenting with your purchase patterns and buying from smaller brands. Why? Because lately it has been much more possible and easier for smaller and newer and local brands to become/be sustainable compared to bigger and stronglyestablished brands.

Why sustainable fashion is important?

Sustainable fashion is important because it is a way to reduce the impact of fashion on the environment. This can be done by reducing waste, recycling materials, and reusing existing garments instead of making new ones. Some of the most popular concepts w.r.t this is fashion are upcycling, thrifting and recycled fashion product business practices.

It also helps with your overall health by reducing exposure to chemicals that may cause cancer or other diseases in humans (such as dioxin).
